Importance of Sleep Study in a Sleep Lab
Since most people are unaware of this craze, let me spend a brief time to explain what a sleep lab is.
A sleep lab is basically a room with equipment such as electronic electrodes which a technologist attaches, one on your head, two on each leg, and two on your chest for checking the heart rate. Two sensors in your nose to monitor airflow, a band around your chest and one around your abdomen, an oximeter to measure your blood oxygen on your finger and a microphone on your neck for sound.
All these contraptions are meant to study your sleep. You may think that losing a few hours of sleep every night is not really a big deal, and after all, maybe you have been experiencing sleep loss for years. So what is the big deal about losing sleep?
There are three sleep disorders that might be causing you to feel tired all the time. The causes of these sleeping disorders are many and there is a need to properly diagnose it so that the root can be treated or else it can lead to further disorders. There are different way to treat sleep disorders but this depends on the diagnosis. Some of the most common types of sleep disorder include insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, parasomnias and snoring.
There are, however, a number of things you can do to prepare for the sleep study. It includes arriving with clean hair which means no hair sprays, oils, gels and etc. It also means packing an overnight bag, as you would for a stay at a hotel. You can bring a snack if you are used to having one before bedtime but limit caffeine to one cup on the day of the study and avoid caffeine after two in the afternoon. On the day of the study, alcohol is not allowed, and you clinician should be informed if you are taking medications. Another important thing to bring along is that if you have a favorite pillow, you may want to bring it with you also.
When you sleep in the center it will be a totally different experience as sleeping at home and you need to take note of that. It might take you longer to fall asleep and as many patients have reported the quality of their sleep is not as sound as that they have at home. You can be conscious of all the monitoring devices attached to your body and thus keep you from sleeping at once and well. But this does not really interfere with getting accurate information from your sleep study.
In order to overcome this consciousness, you should take your mind off these mechanisms and focus on bringing your body in a most comfortable position for sleeping, and in case you are not feeling comfortable, you should let the technician know about it because they can easily adjust the monitor positions.
